PEN/Faulkner Gala Readers Visit D.C. Schools with WinS!

On Monday, the PEN/Faulkner Foundation held its 24th annual gala at the Shakespeare Folger Library. The theme of this year’s event was “Resilience,” and as inyears past, we asked a distinguished group of authors to compose and read short pieces written to the theme. This year’s readers featured writers Carol Anshaw, Louis Bayard, Chris Bohjalian, Ben Fountain, Major Jackson, Vaddey Ratner, Elissa Schappell, Susan Richards Shreve, Luis Alberto Urrea, Hilma Wolitzer, and the evening was emceed by Calvin Trillin.
In addition to their participation as readers at the gala, the authors visited area schools as part of our Writers in Schools program. Instructors at Thurgood Marshall Academy, Coolidge High School, McKinley Tech High School, Cardozo High School, Phelps High School, and Bell Multicultural High School welcomed authors into their classrooms where students were able to engage the authors directly about their work. The Gala and class visits with WinS were a wonderful way to start off the new season here at PEN/Faulkner, and we’re looking forward to the dozens of additional WinS visits we’llmake with authorsthis fall.
