Given annually since 1988 in honor of the late Bernard Malamud, this award recognizes a body of work which demonstrates excellence in the art of short fiction. This year’s reading commemorates the 20th anniversary of the death of Bernard Malamud.

Elizabeth Spencer

Elizabeth Spencer is the author of seven collections of short fiction, nine novels, a memoir, and a play. Born in Carrollton, Mississippi, Spencer has been honored with The William Faulkner Medal for Literary Excellence, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Thomas Wolfe Award for Literature, the Richard Wright Literary Excellence Award for Fiction, and an Award of Merit Medal for the Short Story from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Spencer lives in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
