PEN/Faulkner and the O.B. Hardison Poetry Series collaborate on this event featuring Laura Kasischke, the author of The Life Before her Eyes and many other books, and Julianna Baggott, who also writes, for young adult readers, under the pseudonym N.E. Bode. Both are poets as well as fiction writers, and will talk about the lure of each form.

Julianna Baggott is a poet, fiction writer, and essayist who also publishes under the names Bridget Asher and N. E. Bode. She has published more twenty books to date, including the Pure trilogy, Lizzie Borden in Love, and, most recently, Harriet Wolf’s Seventh Book of Wonder. She lives in Florida, where she teaches at Florida State University.

“Julianna Baggott has a fierce imagination which probes the ordinary details of a woman’s life and lights up both the sacred and profane.”

– Linda Pastan

Laura Kasischke was raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She has published nine novels, one story collection, and nine books of poetry, most recently The Infinitesimals and Space, In Chains, which won the National Book Critics Circle Award. She has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as several Pushcart Prizes and numerous poetry awards. She teaches at the University of Michigan.

“Laura Kasische’s poems probe the lives of supposedly ordinary women along with the extraordinary emotional tumult these lives conceal.”

– Stephen Burt, The New York Times
